Droughts and Downpours - How to Stop Surface Compaction Killing Your Turf
In drought conditions, compacted turf is your worst enemy. It seals the surface, blocking irrigation water from reaching roots, and accelerating turf...

If GreenTek announced a 75% discount on essential pitch maintenance kit, we’d be overwhelmed with orders. But that’s exactly what many grassroots football clubs can effectively get — not through a sale, but via a Football Foundation grant. These grants can cover up to 75% of the cost of new or approved used grounds maintenance equipment, with funding worth as much as £50,000.
After a long, dry spring and a packed fixture list, many community and grassroots pitches are showing the strain. So, if your surface is suffering — thinning turf, compaction, poor drainage — now’s the time to take action with the right grounds maintenance strategy.
The Grass Pitch Maintenance & Equipment Grant is part of a wider push by the Football Foundation to improve the standard of natural turf pitches across England. Backed by the Premier League, The FA, Sport England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the scheme has already supported the improvement of over 12,000 pitches since 2000.
According to the Football Foundation’s 2024 Annual Report, £17.8 million went into natural turf pitch improvement in the 2024 season alone. They’ve already helped deliver over 6,000 ‘good’ quality pitches — above their original target — and are continuing to invest heavily in local grounds maintenance and facilities.
The grant is aimed at non-profit clubs and organisations outside the National League System (steps 1–6) and the Women’s Football Pyramid (tiers 1–4). This includes grassroots football clubs, multi-sport community clubs, schools, colleges, and local authorities — provided they make their pitches available for community use.
Only one application is allowed per season, and it must be submitted by an authorised club representative (usually the chair, secretary or treasurer). If football is a regular part of your pitch usage — even if it’s not your only sport — you're eligible to apply. In fact, the Football Foundation plans to direct around 40% of its investment (roughly £92 million) to multi-sport clubs over the next three years.
Funding can be used for just about any type of grounds maintenance machinery — including high-quality aerators like the Double-Quick and Aero-Quick from GreenTek, which relieve compaction and improve root strength by getting air and water deeper into the soil.
The key requirement is that any equipment you apply for must be recommended in your PitchPower assessment.
PitchPower is the Football Foundation’s free digital pitch inspection tool. You can complete an assessment using just your phone or tablet in about 30 minutes. After submitting, you’ll get a professional report detailing the condition of your pitch — along with any recommended improvements and grounds maintenance equipment, which can then be covered by the grant.
While GreenTek is widely known in golf course management, we also supply professional turf care equipment designed for football and multi-sport pitches — through a trusted network of GreenTek Key Dealers.
We’re proud to support grassroots football and are working closely with the Grounds Management Association (GMA) and local Pitch Advisors to help clubs access the right grounds maintenance equipment — and the best value — to improve playing conditions and prolong pitch life.
